Haunted Items

Not only locations can be haunted, but also people and items. A ghost is an individual who has had a sudden or traumatic death and does not realize that he is no longer alive, thus, he will continue to go through his daily routine as if nothing has happened. Often I’ll see apparitions in the backseat of a vehicle, and later I learn that this was the car used to transport an elderly parent which has since passed away. Let’s face it; we’ve all thought we’ve seen someone sitting in the back seat only to chide ourselves for having such an active imagination. But, if it’s an older car, there is the possibility grandma is still along for the ride.

In 2015 my older sister and I took a small retreat to St Augustine, Florida and stayed in a charming little B&B called the Kenwood Inn. As we entered the room my sister rushed off to the bathroom and I stood there wondering what I should do next as we had not established our sisterly territory. In front of me was a lovely little mirrored dresser on which stood cut crystal glasses and an ice bucket. I decided to pour myself some water, and as I picked up a tumbler a soft female voice clearly stated, “My ring is in the drawer.”

Obviously I was alone, but instinctively I looked around and when I turned back, a grayed reflection of a petite young woman looked out of the mirror at me. “My ring is in the drawer.” she repeated pointing to the left side of the dresser.

I nodded and gently pulled open the small box like drawer which was mounted on the dresser to find that it was empty. Sadly she shook her head, her dark curls swinging around her face. “The other drawer,” she urged. I started to reach for the twin box mounted on the other side of the dresser. Shaking her head, she pointed once again to the drawer I had just opened.

Confused, I pulled out the drawer and turned it over, however, she continued to direct my attention to the little box. Returning to the dresser I probed inside and discovered that there seemed to be a slender drawer above the one I had just removed. A warm smile brightened her face and I realized that she was eager for me to open the hidden drawer.

A small tray, lined with sage green velvet slid out from on-top of the primary drawer. It smelled of roses and cedar. To my amazement, clearly marked on the antique fabric was the perfect round imprint of a small ring. Smiling, the apparition lifted her hand to admire her ring and faded away.

After I told my sister, she insisted that we talk with the landlady. The owner of the Inn was surprised as she had no idea that the dresser contained a hidden drawer. She had purchased the furniture a number of years earlier in an antique store somewhere along the Atlantic Coast and was unsure of exactly where it had come from.

As in many hauntings, if the ghost was attached to an object and touched it regularly regardless of whether the object is relocated, the ghost will continue to interact with it as if nothing had changed. Therefore it is always important when investigating a location to determine if there are any coincidences of an apparition appearing immediately after the purchase of an older object. Clearing the residence does not automatically clear all of the objects inside. However, if you succeed at clearing a ghost from an object, it is highly likely you have cleared it from any other location or object it has been haunting.
